Playground of the Aristocracy: The Wines of Tuscany

  • Theatre of Wine 556 High Road Leytonstone London, England, E11 3DH United Kingdom (map)

The centre of the western Renaissance, land of olive groves and vines, the playground of the Italian aristocracy – Tuscany has a lot going for it. Tonight's tasting takes a closer look at some of the iconic grapes, terroirs and wines that have built modern Tuscany's reputation.

Capturing the search for identity that Tuscany itself experienced following the Second World War, we will make our way to the coastal Bolgheri area, home of the Super Tuscans and superb Bordeaux-style wines, as well as down to the deep south at Montalcino, home of the icon Brunellos that captivated the world in the 80s and 90s.

We will also explore the rolling hills between Florence and Siena that comprise the Chianti Classico district, source of some of the world's best-value fine wine, and increasingly made entirely with sangiovese with the terroir philosophy of Burgundy in mind.

Add to that a traditional white vernaccia from San Gimignano and a drop of the legendary Vin Santo and it promises be a night to remember. Expect icons and bargains, mould-breakers and classics in tonight's tasting of the best that Tuscany has to offer!

Our shop tastings start at 7.30pm and run for approximately one-and-a-half to two hours. We will taste 6-8 wines on a theme, and bread, cheese and charcuterie is provided to match with the wines. Due to the communal nature of the tasting, we are unable to cater for dietary requirements.
